Overview
Bangladesh is one of South Asia's largest potato producers, with annual production exceeding 10 million MT. Potatoes are the country's leading vegetable export, shipped to the Middle East, South-East Asia, and Europe.
Varieties
The main export varieties are Cardinal, Diamant, and Granola. Cardinal is the most popular for export due to its red skin and good storage characteristics. Diamant is preferred for its yellow skin and high yield.
Season & Supply
The main harvest runs from December to May. Thanks to extensive cold storage infrastructure, potatoes are available year-round, ensuring consistent supply for export.
Packaging & Loading
Potatoes are typically packed in 10kg mesh bags, 25kg jute bags, or 10kg cartons. A 20ft container holds approximately 24–28 MT depending on packaging.
Logistics & Shipping
Sea freight is the most cost-effective option, using ventilated or reefer containers. Transit times to the Middle East are 10–14 days, to Europe 20–28 days, and to South-East Asia 7–12 days. Proper temperature management (4–10°C) is essential to maintain quality.
